Used Trimming Press Inspection Checklist

A trimming press removes flash from a forging route where the part and die require that operation. Inspect the individual machine against the trimming die, forged part and site plan. A nameplate rating cannot confirm that the proposed tool or production sequence will fit.

Start with the Operation and Tooling

Identify the flash-trimming operation

Bring the forging drawing, flash outline and the intended trim sequence. A trimming press belongs after the relevant forging operation; review the wider route in the forging press and trimming press guide.

Measure the die envelope

Record the die-set height, table footprint, slide interface, clamping arrangement and required opening. Compare these dimensions with the documented press table, slide, stroke and shut-height range before a visit.

Check ejection and part discharge

Confirm how the trimmed part and flash leave the die. Inspect the ejector arrangement where fitted, its interface with the proposed tool and the clearance around the discharge route.

Frame, Bed, Ram and Guides

Frame and bed

Inspect accessible frame and bed areas for cracks, deformation, corrosion and undocumented repairs. Note repairs for review with the seller and, where needed, a qualified engineer.

Table and clamping face

Inspect the table surface, T-slots or other clamping features, and the condition of any bolster. Confirm that the planned die can be positioned and secured without improvised packing or altered clamps.

Ram and guides

Inspect the ram face, guide surfaces and lubrication points. Measure guide condition by the machine documentation or the inspection method agreed for that model; visible scoring, dry contact areas or irregular movement need investigation.

Drive, Controls and Safety

Drive train

Identify the drive arrangement from the machine documentation. Inspect accessible bearings, gears, couplings, belts and lubrication lines for condition, leaks, abnormal noise and unrecorded modification.

Clutch and brake where fitted

For a mechanical press with a clutch and brake, inspect their documented service condition and test their response during a permitted powered run. Do not infer stopping performance from the nominal press force.

Controls and guarding

Record the control system, emergency-stop arrangement, guards and interlocks present at the time of inspection. Any upgrade required for the destination site should be scoped separately from the used-machine condition.

Powered Test and Documentation

Plan the powered test

Where a test is available and site rules allow it, agree the checks in advance: ram movement, drive response, lubrication, ejectors and controls. A no-load run does not prove fit with an untested trimming die.

Record nameplate and drawings

Photograph the nameplate and collect available manuals, electrical drawings, lubrication information, foundation drawing and service records. Compare the recorded model and dimensions with the listing before an offer.

Inspect the site interface
