What to Check Before Buying a Used Vertical Turning Lathe

Faceplate run-out

Measure faceplate radial and axial run-out. This is the primary accuracy indicator for a VTL; excessive run-out cannot be fully compensated by tooling adjustments.

Cross-rail and saddle gibs

Check gib clearance on the cross-rail and vertical saddle. Worn gibs increase vibration and surface roughness in finish-turning operations.

Main spindle bearings

Listen for bearing noise at different spindle speeds and check for thermal drift after 30 minutes of running. Spindle bearing replacement on large VTLs is a major rebuild cost.

CNC control (where fitted)

For machines with CNC control, verify the controller is functional, axes home correctly and that a test program can run without error. Obsolete controllers may require upgrade.

Coolant system and way covers

Check coolant pump function and way cover condition. Damaged way covers allow chips into guideways and accelerate wear of the critical sliding surfaces.

Why Source a Used VTL from TRIGA

Heavy vertical turning lathes appear on the secondary market infrequently. When a plant restructures, reduces capacity or closes, TRIGA sources VTLs from industrial facilities across Europe and beyond. Registered in Poland, we provide full EU documentation, EUR pricing and export logistics to any destination worldwide.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Used VTLs on the European market typically range from 1600 mm to 5000 mm table diameter. Machines above 3200 mm are rare and command a significant premium. Contact us for the specific table diameter and height-under-beam of machines currently available.

VTLs machine large-diameter rotating parts: turbine casings, flanges, wheel hubs, large gears, pump bodies, bearing races and valve bodies. They are used in heavy engineering, energy, shipbuilding and defence applications.

Yes, subject to electrical connection at the storage site. Contact us to confirm availability — we can demonstrate spindle rotation and axis movement during a site visit.

Standard mechanical components (bearings, seals, gearbox parts) are generally sourceable from European suppliers. Electrical and control components may require modern replacements. We can advise on the specific machine's condition.

Large VTLs must be partially disassembled: the cross-rail is removed and the faceplate crated separately. Total shipping weight is typically 50–150 tonnes. TRIGA coordinates specialist craning, transport and route permits.
