What to Check When Buying a Used UMARO VTL
Faceplate run-out
Measure radial and axial run-out on the faceplate with a dial indicator. Run-out above 0.05 mm at the working diameter points to spindle bearing wear or a distorted table, both of which need reconditioning.
Cross-rail and saddle gibs
Check gib clearance on the cross-rail and the vertical saddle. Worn gibs produce vibration and surface-finish defects that tool adjustments cannot fix. Gib adjustment is routine maintenance; full replacement on a large machine takes time.
Spindle bearings
