About Barnaul Knuckle Joint Presses

Barnaul's press range is built around the knuckle-joint (toggle) drive mechanism. Unlike a straight crank press, the knuckle joint delivers full rated tonnage only in the final few millimetres of slide travel, typically 1–3 mm before bottom dead centre. This force characteristic makes them efficient for hot die forging, where maximum force is needed only at die closure, and draws less energy per stroke than an equivalent-tonnage crank press.

The K-series (K8336, K8340, K8342) and KB-series designations refer to the same underlying press families; the prefix difference reflects production batch or minor design revision rather than a fundamental change in the machine. K8340 and KB8340 are frequently listed interchangeably in the market. Key specifications to verify during inspection: nominal force (ton), stroke (mm), shut height, table dimensions and main motor power.

What to Check When Buying a Used Barnaul Press

Knuckle mechanism and pins

Inspect the knuckle pins and bushings for wear. Excessive play in the toggle joint causes stroke variation at bottom dead centre and reduces forging accuracy. Pin replacement is straightforward but requires the press to be stripped down.

Clutch and brake

Check friction linings, pressure springs and the pneumatic supply valve. A worn clutch increases the stopping angle — a safety risk on any press. Pneumatic components are standard and widely available.

Frame and tie rods

Look for cracks at the crown corners and verify tie rod nut torque. Tie rod elongation is the most common structural defect on high-tonnage Soviet presses and requires specialist repair.

Guides and gibs

Measure slide clearance. Knuckle joint presses are less sensitive to guide wear than trimming presses, but excessive clearance causes lateral force at die closure and accelerates tooling wear.

Electrical and safety systems

Original Soviet electrical panels (380 V, 50 Hz) may require adaptation for local supply standards. Verify all safety interlocks, two-hand control and overload protection are present and functional before shipment.
