What to Check Before Buying a Used Screw Press
Screw and nut condition
The screw is the heart of the press. Check thread flank wear using a pitch gauge and inspect the nut bronze for pitting. Excessive backlash reduces energy transfer efficiency.
Friction discs
On friction screw presses (Stanko F1734 series), inspect the friction disc linings and their contact with the flywheel rim. Worn linings cause slippage and inconsistent stroke energy delivery.
Frame and gibs
Inspect the frame for cracks at the crown and bed junction. Check slide gibs for wear — screw presses are often used for coining and die forging where slide alignment is critical.
Brake and control
Verify that the brake holds the slide at top dead center without drift. Confirm that the control system supports single-stroke and inching modes as required by your process.
